Making a roof/hood.....

Post by Ieuan » Sat Nov 09, 2013 8:43 pm

Well funds are tight, and I want to put a roof on the jeep, so thought I'd look at alternative roof options (normal Willys stile Bow, would be well over £100 and Canvas made to measure at least £300)

Thought of the Land Rover Sticks that I used to have on my series 2 and found some on eBay that seemed cheap and guy was willing to post - I was worried about the width though, but thought I could work something out.

Anyway, won the set of sticks for £35 with £15 postage and finally got round to trying them out today, they are a perfect fit from a width point of view - Have attached the back ones - one new hole either side needed drilling, but need to work out how to fix the front ones, shouldn't be too complicated though.

Canvas next, I am thinking of getting a 110/109 canvas tilt for a Landy as my jeep is longer than the normal ones - need to find one and ask what the measurements are....according to what I measured today with the sticks in place, it needs to be 290cm fron the screen to to the top of the tailgate. I could also look at buying a long piece of canvas, but a pre-made canvas top would be easier for me (less sewing!!)

Will keep you posted

Cheers

hmmmmmmmm, I think I need lessons in how to use a tape measure

I'm sure I measured it correctly, several times....but my 110 Land Rover tilt turned up today, £85 inc postage, which I still think is a good purchase, but as you can see It'll need some alterations!

Oh well, you can see that it has the basic shape that I'll need and plenty of canvas to play with, so I now have a project over Christmas

Well it looks like the potential is there. Kudos if you can tackle this without a machine though. Time to get out the tailors chalk and start marking up mate. Good luck :D

Thanks both :)

The basic shape and fit is there and I have some experience sweing my canvas doors a few months ago, so I'm planning to take on the task over Christmas (I'm off for a couple of weeks).

1st step will be to the middle set of sticks and get them in place, raising them a few inches so the canvas is lifted above my head. Once this is done I can then attach canvas tot eh tailgate and stretch it forward tot he screen, so I know where I need to cut.....then mark it out an d start cutting!

May not be perfect, but it should look ok (I hope)

Will keep you all posted

Well it has been quite a long time since I gave an update (Not sure if there's anybody still alive on the forum? )......but, I've finally manged to get round and do some work on the hood, have fixed the Land Rover series 'Sticks/Frame' in place and have cut the Land Rover series hood to shape  Not a perfect fit, but I'm really happy with her, especially as the whole lot has only cost me £135 :good:

All I've got left to do now is to sort out the fixings along the windscreen, I already have these, just not fitted yet. And trim the front bit of canvas seen on the edge of the screen, not done this yet, as want to see how best to position the fixings.

Today was one of those very rare days where the sun was out, took her for a short run and all seems ok (it even managed to stay on the screen!).......She did pull tot he left a bit when braking, but need to loosen everything up

Got plenty of headroom as well

Nice job there dude coming along nicely.

As an observation, do I detect a slight slop front to rear? The reason I ask is if you intend to put a top section on your doors you might want to lift the frame hoops up a tad and get things horizontal. It'll make life a lot easier when lining things up.

Your'e right though been real quiet lately. This soggy weather doesn't help my fence has all but gone, how and why my old shed is still standing is a mystery and you could "green lane" on my front lawn. Still, compared to folks to the west of us we're doing OK.

Still, enough already.

Will stay on the forum once it's gone as you never know :)

Thought it was your. Just seen it posted on the HMVF forum too. Very mixed comments there, but they are purists on that forum

Good luck with the sale.
