cj 4a rebuild

Post by cj4a nz » Mon May 25, 2009 2:20 am

Hi well got this jeep about 8 months ago it had been lenghtened the back cut off behing the seats and a flat deck built on and had been a farm vehicle for the last 30 + years it was retired when the motor started smoking and was cheaper to replace a hilux it was fitted with a spare engine (they had 3) and used occasionaly was running 600x 16 tractor grips with duals on the rear i put on 235 75 15 to get her home as they other tyres were wanted else where
first thing i did was pick up the jeep (8 hrs each way) waterblast the whole thing inside and out, source another body pick it up (4 hrs each way) work out where to cut it to join them together then start patching and welding several months later i had them joined and a little bit of bog painted during all this work i was also rebuilding the brakes hose etc
rewiring her
finding rims 16 inch and tyres 750 16 ,suzki vatira v6 rims fit
getting the smokey motor to run
rebuilding the rear bar as it had been forcable remove so years ago it now has a bit of rhs and some reinforment for a tow bar
when alll back in one piece started to work on roll bar/cage
about this time my job looked shakey so moved on to the bits i couldn't do at home and got most of them done before i lost my job
one of the biggest problems i had was the waterpump i had 3,smashed one pulling it apart and then couldn't find parts to rebuild till i lost my job then found some new ones in aussie but have not bought yet as still no job so puddling around on other things tiding up the wiring sorting the exhaust, fitting hilift jack, fitting radios etc, snorkle and trying to find replacment carby weber mite fit?
it has the f 134 engine and 3 sped with no sycro or overdrive and dana 44 front and rear so ive been toldI did get some spares
2 diffs front and rear
2 spare engines 1 in bits
springs, shackles etc
am trying to post phots but some to big but will keep trying heres a before and after
it is currently road legal with wof ang reg but not drivable due to no waterpump and windscreen

future plans
disc brakes all round
soft top
shorten front bumper
replace springs as mine have sagged real bad
rebuild another motor
go to 6 point cage from 4 point roll bar
lockers or some sort or lsd front and rear
use her as designed !!
will be my only vehicle with 4 wheel when finished i have a scooter to get around every day

what size tyres are you guys running? as the look better a little bit wider
well photos and up dates to follow

you've done a great job so far from the looks of it :good: i myself quite like the look of 7.50 x r16's on a jeep . i run 33 12.50 x r15's on one of my jeeps and they look big , but it all depends on what you want to use the jeep for and the look you want , on my other jeep i'm running 235 bronco diamond back's on jeep steel rim's ( a little taller than a std 235 due to the amount of tread , 20mm )

thanks guys
yep unstopable with the tractor grips my uncle (previous owner) drove it when i had my offroad tyres on it and he really noticed the differance
to run 33's what off set rims do you need? as i rub with the 750s on her full lock and twisted up they measure 32 inches high but with my planned brake upgrade need to stay 16" rims am having trouble locating new 750 tyres and would like to go slightly wider they measure 8" wide

You should still be able to run a 15" rim if running a suzuki disc set up .
It's the offset that will give you probs you are on about with the 16" grand vitara rim's ( spacers would cure it ) but if you want to keep the 16" rim's and are struggling to get 7.50's , try and get some 235 85 x r 16's as they are more or less the same size ( a landrover defender size so should be easy to get )
If you want to run 33's you will need a spring shackle lift or a body lift at the least , they will go on a 8" rim but i would recommend putting them on 10's , suzuki vitara fatboy , JLX , etc wheels are just the job as the offset is correct in a 8 or 10 x 15" . hope this helps ;)
