Register Website future and donations towards server costs

Post by Alan » Sat Apr 16, 2016 4:28 pm

Well, the 3 years hosting are up and the site needs to be paid for again so quite bluntly, I'm asking for donations towards its upkeep.

I have to admit I am contemplating pulling the plug on the basis that its not the cheapest thing for me to keep paying for and its very quiet on here with very few new posts appearing. Not surprising considering there are very few left on the road in the UK now.

Having looked at the server logs, I was surprised to see we are viewed nearly as much now as we were 5 years ago when the site was much busier with members posts. These views are genuine web users too, not search engine spiders as I first suspected.

An alternative idea is to move to someone else's server just to keep the data safe, our bandwidth use is relatively low and the site footprint is relatively small at around 5 gig in its entirety including databases, software etc.

knowing absolutely nothing about running a website, I have to ask - what does it cost?

A fair question.

£180 is the cost, that gets three years server hosting including domain registration.

I'm happy to increase the amounts donated, PM me if you believe I'm not "pulling my weight", I enjoy a good website backed with a lot of information that I would otherwise miss out on. I used to run a cattle society website and there is a lot of time and effort involved.

I would be happy to chip in, too.

Please let me know the means - PayPal or whatever.

OK, I have paid the renewal, we are here until April 2019 :yahoo:

Anyone wishing to donate, please use the button at the top of the page which defaults to £15, or if you want to donate a different amount, use alan @ lornaben . com in paypal.

Falstaff, it's not about 'pulling your weight', it's about a little help if you can. Some can and some can't. I've had an interesting past, so I fully understand the concept 'would like to but can't'

I will never expect help from anybody but I'm not too proud to ask and do appreciate it if people do. This site is free to use and will remain so to anyone. Help with the running cost is entirely optional.

Hi Myles,
No you haven't gone mad, the button has gone with the new software installation.
I will be re-instating it when I finish the coding, but for now use

First things first, thanks to those that have donated, it's heart warming to think human nature is still alive and well.

Donations have reached just over half the cost of renewal so far. Thank you :clapping:
