Help experts
My Mindy chucks out a lot of white smoke on startup and overrun

but doesn't use any water

I have tried Redex and have changed all the filters

could it be a leaky injector- if so where can I find some with correct part nos please? Is the 2.5 D lump out of a Granada the same engine?
advice needed please?

yes the Jeep was left standing for a long time before I bought it- and it only gets occasional use on the farm

it is possible that there is water in the tank

I will take it to someone in Inverness whne we get north next week

hi if you look on bottom of your fuel tank you can take out the banjo fitting and drain the tank you may see water in the fuel or take off the rubber pipe to the pump and drain :hello: :beg: but watch your tank is not rotted

Am now up in the Highlands - having had a lot of excitement on the river with 5 teenagers (boys)

We were fishing off my island when I heard a rumbling- to see a wall of water - the river had risen approx 4 feet in 10 mins! I just got out with very wet feet over wellies as I wasn't in waders

2 children got marooned on the island; river off our bank is far too deep and strong- so fit trailer pick up up our dinghy drive all the way around 6 mile trip to effect rescue from other bank (in old Isuzu) since river current was less strong that side!

just made it with 4 of us on the rope to dinghy to ensure it didn't get away

anyway in all this we haven't been using Hal
so what has happened
Hal seemingly ran out of fuel - fortunately very near our holiday cottage which has an unused oil tank- popped back to the Lodge to get a jerrycan and a hose and filled Hal up with 10 litres of kero. Managed to start Hal and drive him home.

still smoking tho and some hestancy
so I did as you suggtested and drained the tank, not much grunge in there- didn't look like water but certainly slightly frothy fuel- difficult to say, Re filled tank thru VG strainer and still trouble starting. Managed to prime things and the odd bit of petrol. Went to Inverness with 10 lit jerrycan filled with good deisel and injector cleaner. Still no start. Urggg. Then I tried the other primer the one on the filter. and guess what the smoke has gone
sent children up the river to give Hal a good blast- 3 miles! and now good as gold!
so we are ready to go lamping.............

Think I may have spoken too soon. He stated smoking again esp when cold and on overrun- but I have used a tin of diesel injector cleaner in the fuel tank

All I did was pressurise the filter with the primer pump

most of children have now left so I will do something major next summer!

On the side of banjo on filter supply side there is a bleed screw pump till a good stream of fuel, close bleeder. on pump some have a bleed screw to continue bleeding. lastly crack injector supply nuts one at a time with engine running and if no dodgy pipework all should be fine to go.

Hi I am back in the Highlands diagnosing Hal's smoke and hesitancy

broke down on track- easily fixed with a new battery

took it to Inverness (in convoy in case of trouble) and the experts have found the injectors leaking, the fuel filter bowl filthy and reckon the next thing is that the fuel pump has been silted up with the black gunge we found in bowl.
at least the headgasket is fine

so query to the experts:
What part numbers do I need to find the fuel pump please- will a 1.9 XUD peugeot fit (plenty on ebay)
any advice gratefully received.............

Dear Grandad

This is extremely helpful many thanks- however I have already sourced a s/hand unit from Andy; just my luck if it too smokes- but he thinks it won't! Will keep you posted

The experts did improve thangs by cleaning the injectors which were leaking overnight- leading to the white smoke on start up
